Yet it also raises some serious questions about the concentration of power within the artificial intelligence sector. Google's DeepMind the outfit that previously brought us AlphaFold for predicting protein structures has now unveiled AlphaGenome a model intended to decipher the human genome. Nvidia the chip manufacturer best known for powering computer games has launched a suite of open-source artificial intelligence tools aimed at improving weather forecasting. They're calling it Earth-2. Now, what does that actually mean? Well, for decades, weather prediction has relied on massive supercomputers run by governments, performing incredibly complex calculations. Nvidia's move essentially puts artificial intelligence-powered forecasting into the hands of a much wider group. Think smaller companies, research institutions, even individual developers. The potential impact here is considerable. Imagine a small farming collective gaining access to the same level. of predictive power that was once only available to national weather services. They could fine-tune planting schedules, optimise irrigation, and generally make better decisions based on more accurate, localised forecasts. Now the original version was apparently quite good at extracting text from documents and making them smaller yet struggled with anything remotely complex such as reading order or interpreting multi-column layouts. Optical character recognition, or OCR, is essentially teaching a computer to ‘read' a scanned image of text. Think of it as the digital equivalent of teaching a child to read. The software analyses the image, identifies the letters, and then converts them into editable text. This is incredibly useful for digitising old documents, processing invoices, or any situation where you need to extract text from an image. Yet, as anyone who has tried to copy text from a PDF knows, it is not always reliable. The problem arises when documents have complex layouts, with multiple columns, tables, or unusual formatting. Previous OCR software often got confused, garbling the text or misinterpreting the order in which it should be read.
